“The evening in early September was still warm. The sun had tinted the western sky pink. The wind had already gone to rest. A small table, covered with a cheerful, checkered tablecloth, stood under an old pear tree in the garden. The fruits that had fallen in the grass, still hanging on the branches, gave off a sweet, delicate aroma. Mixed with it was a light smell of vanilla from the freshly made pear jam.
