This painting is my view of one of the most amazing and untouched places on the planet—the Putorana Plateau. It is located in the Arctic Circle in Russia.
It is a wild, harsh land where nature exists in its pristine, majestic beauty. 250 million years ago, a supervolcanic eruption formed this plateau. Time and natural conditions have perfected this unique landscape. Flat mountain peaks, stepped slopes of solidified lava, thousands of waterfalls, several thousand lakes with glacial freshwater, impenetrable taiga at the foot of the mountains and in the valleys, and tundra at the peaks—these are the main features of this landscape. The very name of the plateau, translated from the Evenki language, is very poetic: Putorana means "lakes with steep banks." The local indigenous population spiritualizes nature, believing that trees, rivers, and lakes have souls. Ancient mountains and even every stone have a soul of their own. And so they treat nature with great care.
There are no permanent residents here. It's one of the most sparsely populated places on Earth. This leaves nature untouched. You can walk hundreds of kilometers without encountering another person.
There's no bustle here, no people, only silence and incredible power. Fjord-like lakes are nestled in deep canyons, and above them rise "peakless mountains," preserving the history of ancient volcanoes. This is a place where you can feel at one with real, living nature, and sense its power and soul.
My goal was to capture this atmosphere—not just to depict the landscape, but to share a sense of the wild, untouched beauty and grandeur of this place, where time seems to stand still.
